Today’s lesson will show you an easier way to do it

PDF to lesson#6 Build an Easier Web Site

If you don’t want to learn HTML, or write your website from scratch or if you just want an easier way to build websites, this could be our solution. I mentioned in the last lesson that I would be showing you how to use a web authoring software program, and that’s what this lesson is about.

If you can type, you can use the tools I reveal in today’s lesson:

In the next few lessons, I’ll be showing you some other ways to build a site without writing any code. But be sure to follow the lessons in order, as I think this is a good sequence for you to learn and choose the best method for your business.

Be on the look out for these lessons, and as always-please post your questions and comments on the blog.

A Web Authoring Software program is also known as an HTML editor is simply a software program designed to help you build a website. Arguably the two most popular HTML editors are Microsoft Front Page and Adobe Dreamweaver. The last time I checked these products cost between $200 and $400. And I am not going to talk much about those programs, they are both good software, and if you know how to use them, that’s great. It does take a good deal of time investment to learn them. And if you want to learn how to use them, there are plenty of other courses out there. In fact they even teach Front Page in some community college classes. However if you are interested in buying a Web Authoring Software program, would personally recommend XSitePro, which is a hybrid HTML editor/ site builder/ site management platform. You can get it at www.xsitebuilderpro.com. This was actually created with internet marketers in mind, and I have heard many great things about it over the past few years. It is a great program for the total ‘newbie’ or the experienced marketer; it’s kind of a good all around program. And XSitePro already has a vast number of tutorials and educational materials already available for you when you buy the program, so there is no need for me to cover that here. So if you are looking to buy something, that’s the really good option.

What I would like to cover here in this lesson is a free option. And what I would consider to be the most well known free html editor is what is called NVU. However the developer of NVU stopped developing it a couple of years ago, but the project was continued as an open source project called Composer. Now as of the time of this lesson, Composer also has not had any updates in a long time, but it’s still the best free HTML editor that I have come across so far. You can download Kompozer at http://kompozer.sourceforge.net . Just choose your operating system and download the file, you will probably have to unzip the file, and most likely you won’t even need to install it, it comes as a set of files and just ready to run, so all you need to do is just double click the executable file to run the program. The executable file will be the one that ends in .exe and have your web browsers icon next to it. Again you just double click that to run the program. So when you open it, you will see what is called a WYSIWYG editor. And as we discussed in the last lesson, WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get. Another words, we can create content right there in the program, and what it looks like right there in the program is approximately what it is going to look like on the web. In fact you can even copy and paste content right into the Kompozer HTML editor. Find your content from anther file or something and highlight your content, hit control C (for copy) and then go to the Kompozer HTML editor and click on your page, hit control V (for paste) and the content should look just like what you copied. Now click on the Preview tab at the bottom and you can see exactly what it will look like as a web page. In fact if what you copied was from an HTML copy, you can just open it in the Kompozer HTML editor, and then you can edit it in the program. Now if you click on the source tab, you can see exactly what has been written in HTML format. Now, because you have the WYSIWYG editor you don’t really need to do that, unless you do know HTML and want to do a tweek that way. And there may even be times when making your website ‘Search Engine Optimized’ that you will need to view the source and copy and paste some HTML into the proper place. Or if you are monetizing it with Google Ad Words you would copy and paste the HTML that Google gives you to put into your web pages from the source tab.

So to recap, you have the Normal tab for WYSIWYG, the source tab for HTML source format, and the Preview tab for what it will look on the web.

Let’s do a couple of things that will make your web site look good without having to know any HTML. First, formatting-would one easy way to do something, such as selecting your Headline by highlighting it, and then change the color; you could make it a nice bright red or something. Then you could go into the Font drop down menu to change the font, maybe to something like Tahoma, cause that’s typically a pretty good font for headlines. Then go down to select the rest of the font, and you can change that to Helvetica or Arial. You can also add a link to something in your page, such as a picture of some text. For example if you put in a web site name or a logo, picture or anything that you want to take the person that might click on it to a particular web page, you can link it. So if you have text that says ‘Click Here’, just highlight it with you mouse, then click the link button. This will open up a new window whereas you will type in the URL of the web site location you want the text to be directed to. So if you were directing them to an affiliate link, then you just type in the affiliate link in the box, then click ok, and you have a link. Now you can also choose to open in the same window or a new window, there are other choices, but don’t worry about those right now. If you wanted your website viewer to keep your page open while being directed to another page, then choose new window. The browser will then open an additional window for them to view the linked web page in without closing your website, or being directed away from it entirely…

Let’s do a couple of other things, like say a picture and format a table.

I use tables a lot, because they contain information much easier than having to deal with margins and where something is going to land when you put it in. Another words you can more directly put things right where you want them a little more easily.

We will start by going to the table selection on the menu and select table insert and it will open up a little grid. We will just start by making a 1 x 2 table, which is 1 row by 2 columns. This will be reflected by clicking on the top two squares in the upper left corner of the grid. You can create as big a table as you like right here, and you can always add more rows or columns later or when needed as well.

Now let’s highlight a portion of the text on your page here and copy it. Then paste it into one of your cells. At this point it is going to look fairly ridiculous, but we can change that by re-formatting it by dragging the table side (the red line) over to make it wider. The red line will not be seen on the final web page, so no worries there. And you can keep pulling your table walls until you have them the right size for the content, or how you want it to look. And so now you can add a picture right next to the text in the other column or cell. You see, each box area within your table grid is called a cell.

There a lot of neat things you can do within these cells. Each cell can have a particular background color or even a picture as the background. Or if you would rather, you can make the whole table have the same background. Another words you can format the whole table in table properties or individual cells in cell properties. It’s a really great way to add a box to your web page, or some text next to a picture, easily separating content. The nice thing about this kind of HTML editor is that you can easily select a picture right off your computer that is somewhere on your hard drive. And then when you use the publish feature, it will automatically upload that picture to your website in the appropriate place. Another way to add a picture is to hotlink to a picture that is already on your website or another website, but only if you have permission to do that. I do not recommend linking to someone else’s picture unless you actually have permission to do that. It’s very easy to hot link a picture just by right-clicking on the picture that is on the web and selecting copy and then just do a control V in the cell you want it in on the new page you are creating back in Kompozer HTML editor. And voila, the picture will be pasted directly from the web into the composer software. Now to get rid of or change the table border, just right click on the table and select table properties, select the table tab, then to get rid of the table select 0 pixels on the border and 0 pixels between cells for spacing, then 2 pixels on the Padding will be fine. Click apply and ok and then you can preview it again to see that the border is now gone. That’s some pretty significant formatting and as you can begin to see, the sky is the limit. Kompozer has a quite a few neat features built into it, you can do a lot with it.

Now you are going to want to go ahead and save the file. Then one last thing we will do is use the publisher feature that is built right into it. We have discussed in the previous lesson about using an FTP client to upload your file to the web. Filezilla works well if you don’t want to use the publisher in the program, some do prefer to use a third party FTP client. But if you want to stay with an all in one solution, Kompozer has the FTP client built into it’s software. What it would do is upload your files to the domain of your choice. If you have uploaded the page previously to the web, then you do pretty much the same thing and any changes you have made will be updated.

Now let’s go to publish on the menu. You will put in your site name perhaps, the URL address of the homepage you are publishing to (your domain) and the publishing server, basically the server location that will hold the files. This (the publishing address) may look something like ftp://yourdomain.com/public_html/ then you will need to put in your username and password for your domain, and that’s it really, you will then just click publish and you can then see the files being uploaded. And even though you may have hotlinked the picture, Kompozer will still upload it.

You can check to see if everything worked by opening your browser and going to your domain….you should see the new pages you just created and uploaded. If you already have it open, you can just click refresh and voila.

So that’s how to build a website with the Kompozer software. Very simple, and again you can do a lot with this program. And when or if you ever want to get into more advance website building with a lot of advance features, you may want to consider XSitePro. For the most part though, you will be able to do most anything you will need for all your basic website building features with Kompozer.

ACTION STEPS:

Decide if you would like to use a web authoring program to build your site.

If yes, choose a program and start using it. If you haven’t yet chosen which method you will be using, go back to the previous lesson and review.

Build it from scratch (using a web language like HTML)

Use a web authoring program like an HTML editor such as Front Page, Dream Weaver, XSitePro or a free on like Kompozer.

Use a template or site builder like HostGator’s site builder.

Use a Script or CMS like WordPress

Next we will be talking about using a template or site builder to build your web site.

In today’s issue…

Getting Started the RIGHT Way with Affiliate Marketing…

A common question I get from my subscribers goes something like this… “I want to make some money online but have no product or service. Can I really generate some income as an affiliate marketer?”

If this describes you, this issue of the gazette is a must-read. Affiliate marketing is one of the quickest methods to generate cash flow on the web today. In the following tutorial you’ll uncover the secrets to generating serious affiliate income.

Affiliate marketing is popular because it allows people to earn online, without having to spend time or mondy researching and developing a new product. All of this has been done for you by the product owner.

This is a tremendous burden lifted off your shoulders because this is usually the most costly aspect of any business venture.

(A word of caution though, you should still do a little research yourself as to whether the market wants the product you are looking to promote, and whether the price point is fair and reasonable enough to attract a big audience.)

Once you’ve decided on a product and found an affiliate program that pays generous commissions, it’s time to put together your affiliate marketing plan.

Pay close attention now, because this is where 95% of people get it completely wrong…

Most affiliates sign up into a program then immediately look for ways to promote their affiliate links. By doing this they are skipping a CRUCIAL step — a step that is REQUIRED if you plan to have ANY level of success…

…setting up a CAPTURE page.

A capture page is simply a one-page “pre-sales letter” that entices the prospect to leave their name and email address in order to receive more information on the product or service they are researching.

Why is this step so critical?

Simple. When done correctly, it accomplishes three extremely important objectives…

1. It automatically builds an opt-in list for you.
2. It builds “relationships” with future buyers.
3. It cross-promotes other related affiliate products and services.

I know what you’re thinking… gosh, I have to do ALL THAT in order to succeed as an affiliate marketer?

Well, not really. You see, all you really have to do is set up a web page and an autoresponder. You do it ONCE for each product you want to promote, and it does all that work for you, over and over and over.

Here’s a list of what you need to get started…

1. The first thing you need when setting up a capture page is a domain name and web hosting account. These are very inexpensive these days and are a must for anyone who is serious about doing business online — even affiliate marketers.

2. Next, you need an autoresponder service (I recommend one of two good ones) either GetResponse or Aweberthat can send personalized email messages and follow-up with prospects at pre-determined intervals.

3. You’ll need a simple website template such as the designs my friend David Jardine gives away.

4. You’ll need a basic web design program, sothink or NVU

More after this important sponsor message…

Once you have those four items at your disposal, the final ingredient you’ll need is a little copy writing skill. Remember, your plan is to put up one simple web page for each product or service you want to promote. It’s job will be to pre-sell the affiliate product and “capture” the contact information of your prospect. (The word capture sounds sneaky, but there is nothing underhanded about this strategy. The prospect actually enters their information voluntarily.)

Here’s how to decide what to write on your web page…

Go to the sales page of the product or service you’ll be promoting as an affiliate. Pick out the highlights, the biggest benefits you can see offered. Think about what other benefits there are that may not be stated already and jot them down.

Now open your website editor program and open the index.html page of your template site. You’re simply putting together a friendly-style sales page using a good headline, subhead and bullet points listing all the benefits you gathered.

Keep it short and to the point. 200 - 500 words is usually enough. Try to keep it informative and void of hype. For example, instead of writing “This amazing tool is so powerful, blah, blah blah,” write like this… “Did you know that there is a tool that can save you the 2 hours it normally takes to do x? What would you do with 2 extra hours a day?”

At the end of your enticing message, paste the email capture form generated from your autoresponder. Let your prospect know that by leaving their name and email address you will reveal this highly coveted tool, piece of information, service or whatever it is you have and they so desperately want. (It never hurts to throw in an added bonus such as help and advice any time they need it!)

Note: Do not mention the name of the product or service on the capture page, just the benefits. The reason for this is because they may have seen this product or service before and were sitting on the fence about it and you want the prospect to purchase through your link. You are going to nudge them over the fence with your presentation.

All you are trying to do is build interest, pique their curiosity and whet their appetite for more information.

Now let’s get to the last step, which is one that many marketers do not take the time to implement. Remember the autoresponder we talked about? Here’s how to set it up for peak efficiency…

When people sign up at your site they should immediately receive and email message that tells them where to get the details they were looking for. When they receive that email they will be confirming their opt-in by clicking a link that your autoresponder account generated. This is called double opt-in. In order to get them to confirm, you should give them another gift or two. Over-delivering is a key to generating action.

In that first email message, tell them that they will be receiving an occasional email from you and that they can unsubscribe from these messages anytime they want. But tell them they would really be missing out if they do that. That’s because every 4 or 5 days or so for a few months you will be sharing some important information with them.

Now get to work writing a series of pre-written email messages. In your messages you can talk about the product they asked about as well as related products and service. But don’t make every message a marketing message. Every once in a while blend in a helpful tutorial on the subject they were interested in.

For instance, if your affiliate niche is say, automobiles and they asked about a way to save on car insurance, send them a tutorial on car buying or leasing secrets.

Every once in a while send a message that simply asks them if they need any questions answered. Then try your best to help them when they ask.

While repetition is an important factor in the strategy you’ve just implemented, building relationships is far more beneficial than trying to sell over and over. I’ve found that it’s the BLEND of the two that make this strategy so powerful.

Before you know it you’ll have a large opt-in list(s) that you can broadcast special email messages to. This means you’ll be able to tell thousands of people every time you find a product or service that can help them. (Through your affiliate link of course!) And if you’ve built your relationships properly, those broadcasts can skyrocket your yearly income.

And THAT folks, is how affiliate income blossoms into LONG-TERM income.

So whether you’re brand new to affiliate marketing or you’ve tried it and not had much success, read this issue over and over until you’ve implemented each step. Before you know it you’ll have a significant income building strategy in place.

What a day in history, for us to remember. No matter who you are, what political affiliation you attach yourselves to, whatever your beliefs……there is no doubt to the historical significance of the emergence of this countries new President. One thing stands out in my mind as I watch this inaugural process today, is how our America, the United States…..once again and continuously, in the midst of our Nationhood is able to push forward into such a transition as this day does for us. We now have to knock off the dust and ready ourselves for the change….”THE DIFFERENCE A DAY CAN MAKE“….I am unsure of who coined that statement, but never a truer statement made, as today so very much proves to be true. This special time in our history is a time of many things for different people. For most, a time of hope, pride, a course for ALL of us to find our country. Many times we have faced difficulties in our history, many times we have overcome and grown from and through them. What we face in this nation appears to be an impossible one. That is a big word, impossible. It is not one this nation has ever embraced, and that is what we see today, the knowing that change is POSSIBLE, even inevitable as President Bill Clinton once said, “it is what is right with America” that will turn around any situation to a POSSIBLE or DOABLE solution. The strengths of this Nation overcomes all else. In so doing we unite with the rest of this world in that change. Our effect is strong within the rest of this world both as a world leader and a powerful nation.

There is a tremendous amount to be said for this day, but i am not going to write a book about it, i’ll leave that to the historians that are already hard at it.

Our interests today, my friends, is one of our business….What does this mean for small businesses across this Nation in this America. We not only have reason to be but an obligation to be Optimistic. We know that people will be looking for that change…..as the millions that have been put out of work, look for that change. As it has been predicted for several years now, the people of this nation will begin to work more and more from home. I has been predicted by business magazines that as much as 50% of the people of this country will be working from home by the year 2010. A few years ago, that seemed like a ways into the future, but here we are. I personally believe that the year of 2009 will be that year. The transformation of business changes daily, so quickly that we spend more and more time just trying to keep up with the changes alone. However as we understand that the structure of how we do business transforms as quickly as it does on a daily basis, we come to understand that it becomes easier and easier for anyone to have a successful online business. We are mostly about doing business online these days, in one fashion or another. No matter what industry or category your business falls into, reaching people via the internet has become a must for many years now. These methods continue to transform as well as we are a constant in our creativity in how those millions of people on the internet each day are reached, and the understanding that there are literally hundreds of thousands of new people coming on to the internet each day all over the world. We no longer cater to a local market, but to a World Wide Market.

I can’t say enough in the encouragement to all –both new and old– in this business of Internet Marketing….

NOW IS THE TIME.…Not just a time, but the time. All that we have been doing up to now, has prepared us for this year. And of course it won’t end there, it will as always only continue to transform. It is just that Now is the Time to Start, to build, to take Advantage of that growth. Develop, move, TAKE ACTION.

This is a call to not overlook a very powerful time for your business. 2009 and forward is going to be an enormous time for Online Entrepreneurs.

Use the wisdom of those tried and true methods, and don’t be afraid to get creative….and to share it with us too. There is plenty for all. We support each other as the money just goes round and round and round the World.

Most important is that when you have established your business, share both your time and money for all those in need (and there are plenty). Join Obama’s vision to make the change happen with your service to your community. That is what is really going to make the change come about, and it will….Be a part of it!

Going Green is top on my list as i personally am of the opinion that it must be the World’s priority as well. One of our biggest struggles the world faces now truly is more about our Earth. The Human Species has little of anything to look forward to without a Healthy Earth.

There is a lot to know about what going green means, and I am not going to ask anyone to try to understand it all….So what I am going to do is to ask you to rely on an organization that has a reliable history of doing that for us. GREEN AMERICA, (formerly Co-Op America)…..is on the forefront with the Obama Energy Team, working hand in hand with the actions of being and going Green here in America. Stay tuned to what they are doing and stay tuned to the knowledgeable advice they have to offer as they offer that guidance to lead us into a Green Future that is so detrimental to our species here on the Earth. Stayed tuned as they bring us the information and keep us informed to what the Obama Green Team is doing each day, week, and month as they move rapidly towards the necessary activities, programs, and everything else that is involved with changing the way the world uses energy, for a healthier earth. This is the transformation I look forward to.

You can easily keep updated with their great newsletters, and here is a brief message from Green America:

“Last week, we told you about our Clean Energy Victory Bonds proposal (and other solutions from the green economy), which we shared with the Obama Transition team. This week, we are spreading that message to a wider audience of Americans, in our latest newspaper editorial, a shortened version of our recent Real Green article.”

It can be really confusing if you’re not familiar with the process. But it’s probably a lot simpler than you think…

You may have questions like…

Do I need to know HTML?

What’s the best site building program?

What if I’m a total non-techie?

These question and much more will be answered for you in this lesson

Oh, and if you DO have a website already…be sure to comment and let us know what worked or didn’t work well for you!..

The Main Points of Today’s discussion will cover: Launching a website before the product is done because…, Getting your website online is a milestone-You can start marketing it before the product is done, Website vs. web page, Ways to build a website (from scratch or using a web authoring program etc., Using templates or site builders, Using a script or CMS (ex. WordPress), Outsourcing it (paying someone else to do it for you).

In previous lessons we discussed why you need a website, how to get your domain and choosing a web host. So the last few lessons have basically been leading up to this point of launching a website, and it’s exciting, particularly if this is your first website. Getting your website online is a major milestone in your internet marketing journey. Today we’re going to talk about your options for building a website, and making it a reality.

Now you might be wondering, why am I showing you how to build a website before I show you how to build a product? Isn’t that kinda like putting the cart before the horse?…

Well not necessarily…there are a few good reasons to launch a website before you have a product finished or other method of monetization in place.

Reason #1 is because getting your website online is a huge milestone, and i would rather get you there sooner than later. If we waited until you have the product done and the sales copy written and everything else before launching a website, but it is important to get your website online, again, particularly if this is your first because it helps solidify your vision for your business. And it might give those who never thought you would ever be able to build your own website something.

Reason #2 is because you can actually start marketing your website and your product before your product is done. We will talk about that a little more when we cover product launches in the future. If your are familiar with Jeff Walkers Product Launch Formula, you will know that the pre-launch is in many ways the most important part of a launch.

Reason #3 is because some of you already have products and are itching to figure out how to get them online with your own website.

So let’s get started, and just so you know, we will be covering Product creation after we spend the next few lessons learning the ins and outs of building your website.

First of all–What is a Web site?

You have obviously seen a website before otherwise you would not be here reading this lesson, but maybe you have never stopped to think about it, so I am going to try to avoid getting all technical on you, and try to put it into fairly simple terms.

A Web Site is a virtual collection of data that can be accessed via the internet. Most often a website consists of one or more web pages. So just to make that clarification, a web page is just one page, and a website is one or more pages. I am making that distinction for you because quite often I will hear a newbie say, hey have you been to my web page, which makes them sound like they are stuck in the ’90’s and they got themselves a free webpage on geocities or something. So if you want to sound like a Pro, then call it a website, unless it truly is just one page.

Ok, so websites are accessible via the internet because they reside on web servers…Now you don’t need to worry about that because that’s what your web host does and we already talked about and signed up for web hosting in the last lesson. Web sites are visible on web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Firefox because those browsers receive the data from the web server and they translate it into what you see on your computer screen. They translate, because a web site or web page is written in the language of the internet, in fact there are many code languages of the web, but the most predominate language of the web is HTML. Other common languages include PSP and ASP….and additionally languages are often combined, such as the case of JAVA script or FLASH imbedded in an HTML Document.

So simply put…. if you want to create a web page you either need to know the languages of the web, or you need a tool that will do it for you… Ok, so this is not a comprehensive list, but here are some of the main ways you can build a website:

Build it from scratch

Use a web authoring program

Use a template or site builder

Use a script or CMS

Outsource it

Now these are the 5 choices we will be talking about. But there are lot of variations even within those five choices.

In this lesson, I am going to break it down and show you the options and what is involved in each of them so you can make the best decision for your own business.

Building it from Scratch: You would have to learn a web code language such as HTML or PHP. Here is a great web site for learning the code at http://www.w3schools.com . You can write the code by yourself, and this may sound pretty difficult right?…Well, yes and no…the good news is that you do not have to be a total nerd to understand the basics of HTML. It really is a very, very mild coding. In fact it is no where near as difficult as learning a foreign language. It is really very simple. It is just a matter of learning some basic tags. Do you need to know HTML to be an internet marketer? Absolutely not…….and you see it promoted by nearly all of the ads you see stating ‘you don’t need to know html or be a geek to make money on the internet’, etc. etc. and that’s true, BUT, it can be very helpful. There are some great advantages to knowing html. You have so much more control, giving you more freedom which can be an advantage in this business, particularly in situations where you need to get something done quickly. Sure the entrepreneurial model is to outsource everything, including website creation, and that’s true, I agree with that philosophy, it can be so much easier to outsource everything and you don’t need to know a lick of html or anything. However the caution is that it is costly. If you are just starting out, this may not be an option for you, unless you have a great webmaster friend that will do it all for free for you, but then remember you do get what you pay for. You will probably encounter situations where you will be glad you know HTML…for example, I have seen product launches where there was something wrong with the page, and it can take days to get your web guy or gal to fix it. Knowing a little HTML, you can fix those pesky problems in literally seconds or minutes. Or maybe you just need to set up a simple landing page, and you need it up immediately to take advantage of a certain opportunity or market condition. In a case like that, expediency is the priority….so even if I had an in-house web master, it would take me longer to convey my idea to the web master than it would for me to sit down for a few minutes and throw together a web page. So again there is more than one way to skin this cat….Some of the wealthiest online gurus are those who have absolutely no technical skills, and they focus solely on building their business, and that’s great, but in my experience and knowledge of those that are making a good six figure income online DO know HTML, and they use that knowledge to their advantage even if they also have a team of people working for them. It’s a skill you may want to consider learning.

Using a Web Authoring program: Depending on what program you use, you may or may not need to know html. The most popular web authoring programs are what is know as an html editor such as Front Page or Adobe Dream Weaver….most use what is called a WYSIWYG element (What you see is what you get)…in other words, what you see on your screen within the software is what your web page will look like in the web browser. This is how you are able to create a web site without knowing html. It used to be that WYSIWYG editors had a lot of downfalls in their ability to efficiently and accurately create web pages. But today they have become quite good, and there is a fairly well known FREE wysiwyg editor out there called NVU Since I am focusing on FREE and LOW Cost methods in these lessons, I will eventually be showing you how to create a web site with NVU.

Now another option would be to use a template or site builder, and I could have easily seperated these two options into individual categories of their own but I combined them because often templates and website builders go hand in hand. A template is basically a shortcut. Someone has already designed a web page or a website which constitutes the template. In many cases all you need to do is customize the template to include the content for your web site, and then it is ready to upload. The really nice thing about using templates is that you do not have to be an artist and you don’t have to pay a web designer, yet you are virtually guaranteed to end up with a decent web site because your website will look like the template. They can save a lot of time, particularly if you are launching a lot of web sites. A site builder on the other hand is either a software program or a web based application that enables you to build a web site through a user friendly interface, similar to a web authoring program except for it has a little more of a point and click, fill in the blanks type of interface. Site builders use templates as the basis for the web site, and that is why I grouped these two together. www.XsitePro.com is one of the favorites. It is really a hybrid between a traditional web authoring program and a site builder, it’s kind of in a category all it’s own. You can build a website from scratch or you can us a template, you can write the code or you can go fully wysiwyg. One thing is liked so much about XsitePro is that it is built with online business owners in mind. It actually helps you create a website that is good for your visitors and for the search engines. So if you are an internet marketer and want to invest in a really good site builder, I would recommend www.XsitePro.com It is said to be above Front Page or any other on the market. The difference is clear being, while there are many other programs available to help you build your website, XsitePro intuitively helps you build it the right way. I personally use both FrontPage and WordPress right now, but i am seriously looking at XsitePro for my future needs, I just keep hearing great things about it’s use. I am confident that you would be quite happy with it. It can actually help you build your web site on auto pilot.

A template or site builder (which as I mentioned in the last lesson is offered for free with Host Gator). There are some good ones you can purchase or some free ones. The free ones quite often have their own agenda, like advertising etc. Now remember a lot of hosts do have a site builder built into their armory of tools. Host Gator is one. and since so many people use Host Gator, we will have a lesson on building your web site with Host Gators site builder.

Using Script or CMS:

A script or CMS (content management system), such as Word Press which is a Blogging platform that is essentially by my definition a type of CMS. There are also specialty scripts, some made especially for internet marketers. Depending on what kind of site you are building, a script like that could be a great choice. There are also membership site scripts, they can act as Content Management Systems, in other words if you wanted to have a password protected member area of your website, one option is to use a special membership site application or script but also acts as a CMS. We may have a lesson on setting up a membership site at some point. We will be using a script that is not a CMS but rather works on any type of site you build, in other words it would fit right in with you html, etc.

Another type of website script is a form application such as phpBB, or Vbulletin….that is what you would use if you want your web site to be a bulletin board or a forum…..there are many different kinds of scripts and CMS that you could install on your domain, many of which would give you an administration panel to publish your content to your website without even needing to know html…Frankly there are a ton of them out there, but the only one I am going actually cover is WordPress because it has become my publishing application of choice over time….in fact “the sum of it” is a WordPress site. If your domain is hosted on a C-Panel host like HostGator, then there is a good chance that you will have one click installer for WordPress. The details for using WordPress on your site will be covered in another lesson. The great thing about WordPress and other such applications is that they essentially structure and organize your web site for you. You just simply log-in to your control panel and add some content and it will automatically integrate that content into your website. It will create a page for it or archive it or whatever you want to do with it.

If you don’t want to do any of the above then you can….

Outsource it: paying someone else to build your web site for you.

Your site would still be built by one of the methods above, but you will paying someone else to do it for you. If you are paying someone else to do it for you, you probably won’t care what method they will be using, what you would care about is the end result. There may also be a lesson on effectively outsourcing your website at some point in the future…..

I hope this has been somewhat helpful, and welcome your input or comments. Please share what has worked or not worked if you already have a website.

ACTION STEP:

1) Choose a method that you will use to build your website with. think about all these options, do some research and choose ONE of these options.

Methods will be covered in the next lesson.

LESSON #4

Download PDF for lesson #4

In the previous lesson, I talked about the importance of having your own website, and we went through the process of registering a domain name.

Now it’s time to take the next step toward getting your website up and running.

It’s a step that all internet marketers, or just marketing your business on the internet, must take if they want to have a successful website.

It also involves a choice.

the problem is, there a good hosts and there a bad hosts…you don

t want to choose a bad one. So I hope you’ll take a moment to check out this lesson to make sure you’re on the right track…

Main points:

Web hosting is what makes your website available on the internet. In a nut shell, a web host puts your web-site onto a computer called a web server, which has a dedicated connection to the internet. A dedicated connection is generally one that is a lot more redundant and reliable than the one you have at home, even if you have broadband. Technically it is possible to host your own web-site through your own computer through your DSL. But I would not recomment it. It is not reliable enough, and when you start getting a lot of web-traffic, your visitors would fill up your bandwith and nobody would be able to access your web-site. So that’s why we need to put your web-site on a specialized web server. The web werver is designed to serve your web pages to visitors when they go to your web-site, which is the domain that you registered in the previous lesson.

ok, so why is It important to choose a good web host in order to avoid potential problems? There are good web hosts and then there are not so good web hosts. There are thousands of web hosts out there and there a many good hosts, in fact there are probably more good hosts than bad ones. The problem is, if you do pick a bad host, it can really get your web site off on the wrong foot. I could talk about some of the horror stories I have heard or personally experienced, but i’ll spare you the gruesome details for now. Let’s just say it’s no fun to invest your time and money into launching a web site, and then experience constant problems because of an inadequate web host. so that’s why I want to get you started on the right foot, by getting you set up with a reliable web host. Having built several web sites over the years and used a few different hosts, I have experienced both the good and the not so good. so I feel confident in being able to recommend a good web host. So Which Web Host should you choose? Now again there are hundred of good host out there, and since I am not going to review them all, I am just going to give you my recommendation. If you currently have a good hosting company, then by all means stick with it. The Web Host i recommend is HOST GATOR for some very good reasons I’ll explain here in a bit. By the way you can check this host out at www.hostgator.com …. Now of course this is my affiliate link, and as always, I appreciate it very much if you use my affiliate link on stuff like this, you certainly won’t get any better of a deal by not using my affiliate link, and I only recommend products or companies that I truly believe in for your business online, and there is a coupon code when you get there for an extra discount until Feb.

Important things to look for in a web hosting company…

Now here are the reasons I recommend Host Gator for your web host…

1) The resources and tools that you’ll need-(they have got the stuff that you need to succeed with your web site) What kind of resources and tools am I talking about. (Right here is where it would be nice to show you a Power Point presentation, but not everyone has Power Point), so I will try to walk you through it as if you were at the Host Gator site right now, (which by the way, you can do just to follow along). So when you get to their web site, just click on hosting plans, and first of all—-RESOURCES: when it comes to web hosting, your two biggest resources are plenty of storage space and data transfer which is often referred to as bandwidth.

2) Ok now just looking at Host Gators smallest hosting plan, ‘the Hatchling’, comes with 350,000 megabytes of storage space (that’s 350 gigs)….and 3000 gigs of data transfer…..now again, that’s the smallest plan at just about the best price out there. Several years ago, you would probably have to pay hundreds of dollars a month for resources like that. But due to storage and bandwidth becoming such a cheap commodity, you can get these resources for under $10 a month. Now, just to put it into perspective, those are way more resources than 99% of you will ever need. The smallest plan is enough to host my site a dozen times over. Just so you know, the reason they are able to sell such high bandwidth is because they know that 99% of their customers are never going to come close to using that much. But if you are in the 1% that uses it, they’ll accommodate you, they will actually put you on a server with a few other high resource users and they will lose money for that web server, but they’ll do it because they know they are going to be making more money overall by being able to advertise these crazy limits….

You know many web hosts have been notorious for overselling their servers, but in Host Gators case…..what makes them so impressive…..is that they actually stand behind those limits, and they will support them. Now there are many other features and tools that I can talk about, but I am just going to point out a few things….Ok, first of all you might notice there is Window web hosting and Linux web hosting.…..You want Linux, now this has nothing to do with what you use on your PC. I am a Windows user on my PC, but again this has nothing to do with Linux hosting…Linux is just better for web hosting–it’s simpler, it’s more user friendly, it has more powerful web applications built for it… having said that… Windows has some powerful stuff too, like asp–but in general for the kind of stuff that we are going to be doing, Linux is better, so just don’t even worry about Windows web hosting….

3) Ok, now right off the bat you will notice that Host Gator uses C-Panel, and this is the Control Panel that I highly recommend. I would not use any other web host that did not have C-Panel, in fact all of my web sites are hosted on C-Panel servers. Host Gator also has a site-builder included, so even if you don’t know HTML, you can get started by using their point and click site builder–and along with that they have 4500 web site templates available for you to use. some of the other things that you will see there are Instant backups (just under the ‘package detail’ heading)…this is great because your site is always backed-up… There is also unlimited My SQL Databases, this is really important because a lot of marketing related programs use those databases. You have CGI, PHP, and all kinds of other languages that it supports. If you happen to use Microsoft Frontpage, it supports and is fully compatible with FrontPage…you can also stream audio and video from your site with Hostgator. They also have something built in called Fantastico, which is one of my favorite things…Fantastico enable you to install all kinds of things on your web site with a few clicks….for example, it enables you to install things like blogs, content management systems, support systems, forums, shopping carts, image gallery, and all sorts of other scripts that are built right into it. In fact I’ll be showing you how to use this to install a WordPress blog on your web site in just a few clicks.

Ok, so those are just some of the resources and tools, and as you will see there are a huge list of them, and I only pointed our maybe five or six.

So that’s one reason I recommend Host Gator….Another reason why I recommend them is they have the support needed when you need help…they offer 24-7 support, and unlike most hosting companies, they don’t outsource their support. When you click on the support tab you will see their many options…they actually have an in house support staff, which is a pretty rare thing in this industries and it’s also been critical to their success and why I believe is the reason the their company has grown so fast…in fact Host Gator was just ranked number 21 on the inc 5000 list of fastest growing companies in America. They do give you a lot of support options, they have a ticket system if you want to use their help desk, they also have phone support & live chat available 24-7 not to mention Email support and customer forums…..

4) And beyond that, they also have the reliability that you need to keep your site online and making money. If your web site isn’t online, it’s not making money…So technically this could have been listed as the number one reason I recommend Host Gator…If your web site is always down, or if it’s down frequently then that’s not a good host. Host Gator has a 99.9% up-time guarantee. In my experience, my sites at Host Gator have never been down.

5) NEXT: They have the right price…they make it affordable and help you keep more money in your pocket. I thin that the prices speak for themselves, so I am not going to say much more about that.

6) One more thing I want to mention is that they are green…they have certified renewable energy credits. I don’t know about you, but that’s a big deal for me….All of their servers are fully wind powered, so you can feel good about getting your hosting from Host Gator knowing that they are doing their part to help the environment as well.

Now, which hosting plan should you choose….well, as I mentioned–even their smallest plan gives you way more that you will probably ever use. However there are a couple of factors you may want to take into consideration….The most important question to ask yourself is: How many web sites are you planning on launching? If you plan on launching only the one web site and focusing on making it the best it can be, then the small hosting plan is probably adequate….Now you could go with (on the hosting plan page) the Hatchling or the Baby, which I think the Baby is probably a little better value because it has more resources. One big difference is the unlimited domains and sub domains. (we’ll talk about the difference later)…

On the other hand if you plan on launching multiple web sites, then your best value is going to be the reseller account, and you can view those by clicking on the reseller hostingplan….one thing people don’t understand about reseller accounts is that they think the they are just for reselling web-hosting. However you do not have to sell any hosting to have a reseller account. They are equally useful for hosting your own web-sites, it’s basically a control panel that allows you to set up an unlimited amount of web sites—so if you want to host other peoples web sites–you can do that……..or you can just host your own web sites, so it’s perfect for multiple web sites instead of having to buy new hosting accounts every time you want to launch a new web site you can simply launch as many as you want and never have to pay any extra hosting fees. Host Gator reseller accounts allow you to host an unlimited number of domains, and of course you would still have to pay to register the domains, and to do that just go back and repeat lesson #3….but you will not need to purchase hosting for each new domain you get, and you don’t have to wait for the host to set up a new account every time you want to set up a new web site. You simply add the new domain to your hosting account and upload your new site. So the smallest reseller account is called the aluminum and is probably enough for most people, but if you plan on hosting a lot of media files or something like that, you might want to go with a larger plan. You can upgrade at any time, so you can start small and upgrade when you need to, so if you are not sure and you think you are going to host multiple sites, then go with at least the smallest reseller account. The final option would be to get a dedicated server, so let’s click on the dedicated server tab. Now a dedicated server is where you have a server dedicated to hosting only your web site or your own collection of web sites, you might have several web sites on your dedicated server. If you are a newbie, I do not recommend you get a dedicated server, you just don’t need it. The advantages to having a dedicated server is that your site is generally going to be faster and in a high traffic situation it is going to be more accessible than if you were hosting it on a shared or a single hosting plan. It also helps you avoid the possibility of being impacted by another customer abusing the server that your site is on. I have never had that happen in my experience with Host Gator, but the possibility does exist.

Now some or most internet marketers will have single accounts, reseller accounts and a dedicated server or two. The reason for this is that they make their money entirely on the internet, and having back up accounts makes sure that the most important sites are always up. Having said that, for the most part, I really don’t think that is anything for you to even think about right now. That kind of accounting for hosting can cost several hundreds of dollars a month just on hosting. I can only hope that some day soon that will be doable for you with ease, but newbies are looking to keep as much money as possible, so it is pros and cons in cost effective ways for awhile. Be wise with your money and your resources.

So here is what I suggest: At the point when your web site is making a few thousand dollars a month, which is the point when I would recommend upgrading to a dedicated server. So you can start with just a regular one, or a reseller account and then once you are making some serious money, and you really want to make sure that your web site has absolute redundancy and the best back-ups and things like that, and then you might want to switch to a dedicated server.

Once you have decided which plan to go with, go ahead and get signed up.

When you get to the part in the order wizard that asks you to ’select a domain option’ and you registered a domain in the previous lesson, you can click to use an existing domain, and don’t worry about that, I will show you how to update you domain servers (DNS) in the next lesson. If you didn’t, then I suggest going over that lesson before going any further, because I explained some very good reasons for registering your domain with someone other than your hosting server.

Ok, so now you would just put in your domain name here, whatever that might be, whatever domain you registered–and then click next, and then on the next screen you can put in any coupon code you may have, if you have one….. Then click calculate totals, and on the next screen your total due will reflect any coupon you may have used (or not). You can then pay with a credit card or your pay pal account.

Hopefully that will give you some insight as to why and how to choose a good web host.

-C-Panel control panel (I wouldn’t go anywhere without it).

ACTION STEPS:

1) Get web hosting

Click here to visit my recommended web host…

In this lesson, I talk about how to choose a hosting plan that best meets the needs of your business. Essentially, it comes down to this question.

How many websites do you intend to have?

If you only plan on having one website (ever), then you should go with a single hosting plan such as Hostgator’s ‘Baby’ plan. If there is a coupon available on the home page, you may actually get your first month free.

If you plan on having multiple websites, your best option is to get a Reseller account, such as Hostgator’s “Aluminum” reseller plan. This will allow you to launch an unlimited number of websites without having to pay any additional hosting costs.

Do the comparisons of shared hosting, reseller hosting or a dedicated server to see which one is best for you business.

After you’ve obtained hosting, we’ll want to make sure your domain is pointing to your hosting account, and we’ll get familiar with the tools you’ll be using (I’ll be covering those things in the next lesson).

As always you are welcome to post your questions and comments……

Have a great day!
